Distorted Dice: A Glitch in AI's Perception
Distorted Dice is an ongoing generative AI video work that exposes the shortcomings of machine perception through a simple yet conceptually loaded object: the die. I asked Pika, Sora and other video generators to generate short clips containing dice. However, closer inspection of the clips reveals distortions — misplaced dots, non-Euclidean geometries, or dice that seem to defy physical constraints. None of the dice has the correct amount of dots.
Dice, as objects, are simple in design but carry deep symbolic weight: they represent randomness, chance, and human attempts to quantify uncertainty. The failure of generative AI to accurately depict the dot count of a die highlights its lack of true spatial and logical understanding.
This work invites viewers to reflect on the limits of machine-generated realism. As AI-generated media becomes more pervasive, the piece serves as a quiet yet unsettling reminder that even with immense computational power, AI still struggles with fundamental spatial reasoning.
